Reiter and Walsh ABC Law Centers Donates Books to Reach Out and Read at the University of Michigan

Each month, we’re donating to a pediatric fund at Michigan Medicine, the healthcare system run by the University of Michigan. This month, we turn our support towards the Reach Out and Read program, which provides a new book to children from low-income families between 6 months and 5 years old that they can take home with them. Michigan Medicine provides high-quality care to patients, educates future scientists and physicians, and conducts new research into treatments and therapies.

The Importance of Learning Reading Skills at an Early Age

One-third of kids go into kindergarten without the skills necessary to learn to read. Reach Out and Read (ROR) was created in order to combat illiteracy by making it a part of primary care. Reach Out and Read at Michigan Medicine was one of the earliest programs to be implemented in 1997 and has now expanded across Michigan to ten more University of Michigan affiliated locations and two independent locations. Since beginning in 1997, over 250,000 books have been donated and a record-high 28,000 books were donated in 2017!

To get involved, consider donating some books! ROR can pick up books from your home or workplace. New books will be given to children ages 6 months through 5 years from low-income families to take home. Secondhand book donations are also appreciated and will be placed in waiting rooms, given to children who are visiting the doctor because they are sick, and those who are not within the age range that ROR services. There is a need for books of varying levels of difficulty, tactile books, and books in different languages. To get more details about what books to donate, click here.

There are also opportunities to volunteer inside an ROR pediatric clinic reading to the kids. To learn more about the participation requirements and get contact information, click here.
