Disability Rights Maryland (DRM) is a private non-profit organization dedicated to advancing and protecting the civil rights of Marylanders with disabilities. DRM advocates for, and provides legal services to, people with many different conditions: developmental delays, physical limitations, traumatic brain injuries, sensory issues, and more.
The scope of DRM’s work is too broad to fully address in such a brief article. Here are just a few of their many focus areas:
Housing: DRM helps Marylanders with disabilities find and remain in suitable housing. This may include assisting individuals in the search for public or subsidized housing, or in obtaining home modifications to increase accessibility. They also promote policy changes to improve housing opportunities for people with disabilities.
Education: DRM advocates for students in the special education system to ensure that they are provided with appropriate education services, are included in activities, and are not placed in an excessively restrictive environment. They are also involved in issues related to educational programming for youth in the juvenile justice system.
Mental Health: DRM works to stop abuse and neglect in psychiatric facilities, as well as to eliminate barriers to discharge. They also advocate for policy reforms to improve support for people with psychiatric disabilities.
Social Security and Employment: DRM assists Social Security recipients with removing barriers to employment – which may include prevention of Social Security Administration overpayments and criminal record expungement – and finding access to appropriate vocational services.
Voting: Part of DRM’s efforts to improve disability rights is getting people with disabilities more involved in governmental decisions. They help people figure out the easiest way to vote, which might entail finding an accessible polling place, voting early, receiving assistance at the polls, etc.
