Psychologists across the country agree that a key element of self-care during the quarantine and isolation periods associated with the COVID-19 pandemic is staying connected to one another.
Most disability service centers that normally provide adult day programs, support groups, recreational activities, and events have had to shut down in order to maintain the safety of their workers and patrons. Several of these groups across Michigan, however, have maintained a virtual presence during this period, offering classes, support groups, informational webinars, and meetings.
Here’s what Michigan disability services are up to.
Friendship Circle Goes Virtual: The Friendship Circle of Michigan is a non-profit organization that offers opportunities for inclusion and socialization for children, teens, and adults with a broad range of needs and abilities. Their devoted staff has created a Facebook group with virtual recreational and informational programming and content consistent with their mission.
Disability Network Mid-Michigan: Disability Network Mid-Michigan offers a way to connect with them virtually on Wednesdays. What’s Up Wednesdays are zoom meeting discussions about various topics impacting people with disabilities. The Disability Network Mid-Michigan also offers other social connection supports through their Facebook group.
Disability Network Northern Michigan: The northern Michigan chapter of the Disability Network offers many ways to stay connected during the pandemic. They host virtual zoom meetings regarding parenting children with disabilities, disability advocacy, and other topics. These are open to anyone, but require a password that must be requested via their Facebook page.
Michigan Alliance for Families: A general resource utilized by many, the Michigan Alliance for Families serves all families in Michigan with educational and informational resources. They have been posting informational tools, supportive resources, and webinars for parents during the COVID-19 pandemic on their Facebook page.
Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute: The MI-DDI is located on the Wayne State University campus, where it offers disability resources and advocacy. They have been posting webinars as well as zoom listening sessions about the needs and resources available for families and individuals with disabilities across Michigan.
Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council: The MDDC advocates for people with disabilities across Michigan. They have been updating their Facebook page with webinars, zoom sessions, and virtual trainings for caregivers as part of their way to stay connected during the pandemic.
Autism Alliance of Michigan: The Autism Alliance of Michigan has continued to post advocacy and independent living trainings on their Facebook page during the pandemic. They also update their page with helpful resources and activities to do during isolation.
Association for Children’s Mental Health Michigan: ACMH Michigan has been actively updating their Facebook page with helpful resources regarding mental health and self-care. They are currently hosting a virtual event called Creative Conversations in honor of Children’s Mental Health Awareness Week.
