Jesse M. Reiter, president and founder of ABC Law Centers (Reiter & Walsh, P.C.) presented at the American Conference Institute’s (ACI) 19th Annual Advanced Forum on Obstetric Malpractice Claims on November 10, 2020. The virtual conference brought medical, insurance, and legal professionals together to share ideas and ensure understanding of the latest claims and medical advances.
Reiter’s presentation, “Exploring Obstetrical Catastrophes: Placental Abruption, Uterine Rupture and Breech Presentations,” defined these conditions and provided case analysis from a plaintiff’s attorney perspective. The presentation reviewed cases and medical literature, examining factors such as health system negligence, patient history, and timing of brain injury and delivery.
The presentation also explored the circumstances in which cord prolapse, uterine rupture, and placental abruption create exceptions to the standard 30-minute rule for C-sections. In these cases, brain injury can occur after 10-18 minutes, so appropriate preventative measures must be taken earlier.
Reiter presented alongside fellow malpractice attorney Daniel J. Huff and Max Wiznitzer, MD, a board-certified pediatric neurologist at the Neurologic Institute at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital.
