Operation Good Cheer 2016
This past Saturday, 12/3/16, Reiter & Walsh ABC Law Centers attorney Euel Kinsey participated in the 45th Annual Operation Good Cheer, helping deliver holiday gifts to foster children throughout the state of Michigan!
The program, sponsored by Michigan Child and Family Services of Michigan, delivers gifts to thousands of children and adolescents a year.
Kinsey and youngest daughter Kristen joined a group of more than 900 volunteers to help deliver more than 10,000 presents to 24 airports throughout the state! Kinsey remembers how he got involved with the project: “I’ve been volunteering with Operation Good Cheer for about 20 years, maybe since 1994, 1995? I had a couple of friends who flew a lot, and when I heard about the project, I thought it was a great idea! The project gives you a great feeling, and I’ve been lucky to sponsor some of the kids in the program…I’m already looking forward to next year’s Operation.”
The two were part of a large team of volunteer pilots who delivered full cargoes of presents to children across Michigan. Kinsey made two trips, including one trip to Alpena, and another to Hillsdale, MI. Last year, the massive effort involved 151 pilots, 257 donors individuals, groups, and organizations, and 500 volunteers who helped to sort and load planes at Oakland International Airport.
About Operation Good Cheer
Operation Good Cheer is an entirely volunteer-run Christmas gift-giving program started in 1971; it focuses on improving the lives of people living in foster care, ranging from infants to teenagers and adults with disabilities. This massive program involves the work of thousands of volunteers, who orchestrate the program from start to finish to make sure participants can open holiday gifts on Christmas morning!
Donors – both groups and individuals – buy items from children’s wish lists; the items are gathered and transported to a central airport by volunteer trucking companies and their drivers. From the central airports, volunteer pilots and drivers distribute their cargo to smaller, local airports where agency volunteers gather the present and hand-deliver them to children in foster care! The program ensures that thousands of kids – many of whom would not receive gifts otherwise – can experience the joy of holiday celebration!
