A judge in Wayne County, MIchigan has approved a $1.95 million settlement between a local hospital and a girl who suffered neurological injuries during birth at the hospital. According to the lawsuit, doctors ignored a significant decrease in amniotic fluid level shown during a routine prenatal test and did not advise the mother about the risks of such a finding. As a result, the baby suffered hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (birth asphyxia) at the time of birth and has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and developmental delays.
Attorney Jesse Reiter of ABC Law Centers in Detroit, Michigan warned that significant decreases in amniotic fluid levels require further investigation, even if the amniotic fluid is still at a normal level.
When doctors ignore significant signs or symptoms during prenatal care, the consequences can be devastating for a newborn, resulting in permanent neurological injury and requiring a lifetime of physical and occupational therapy, not to mention medications and lifelong medical care.
