500,000 Children Each Year Experience Adverse Effects from Medication
Medication side effects are one of the most common complications of pediatric care. In fact, more than 500,000 children each year experience adverse side effects from medications. The majority of children who experience side effects are ages 4 and younger. Antibiotics, such as penicillin, commonly have the most side effects. So, how can you prevent your child from experiencing these adverse side effects? Here are some tips that we thought would be helpful:
1. Talk to your doctor. Discuss any available options of alternative medications that may offer less side effects;
2. Make sure your doctor is aware of any adverse side effects. Do your research on not only the antibiotic, but also on your doctor;
3. Be aware of any signs or symptoms that your child may be experiencing an adverse effect; and
4. Read and carefully follow the instructions.
